Gunnar Unveils Slick 3D Glasses

gunnar 3d glasses
One of many cool new 3D products unveiled at CES 2010, were these super cool looking 3D glasses from Gunnar Optiks, a San Diego-based maker of gaming glasses, as part of a new line of 3D glasses intended for gaming. The futuristic looking 3D glasses made the rounds and caught some second looks.

About a million times better than the freebie handouts you get at the theater, Gunnar has adorned these bad boys with custom-shaped, formed and cut lenses that provide distortion free optics. The price will be in the $190 dollar range. Hopefully they will release an entire line of 3D glasses when 3DTV catches on mainstream.

3DTV Prices Will Likely Drop Within 2 Years

3d tv-glasses
Insight Media have released a report that says 3D television will rapidly grow from sales of about 3.4 million sets this year, to 49.6 million by 2015 and by then representing about 20% of all sales.

“We expect to see stereo 3-D in flagship products with a modest premium of 20% or so over 2-D products,” says Chris Chinnock, principal of Insight Media. “Like any new feature, we think the premium pretty much disappears in two to four years depending on the technology and the brand,” he added. Chinnock told trade newspaper that 3D units would revitalize the plasma TV market.

iSupply, in its study, suggests typical selling prices for 3D sets will tumble from around $1770 this year to just $825 by 2015. Another report from iSupply places forecasts at an even higher level, and talks about 78m 3D sets being sold by 2015 and valuing the 3D market at being worth $64.4 billion.

Sony 3DTV Bravia LX900 Series

sony-bravia-3d

The 60 inch LX900 3DTV from Sony is the first 3DTV that will be available to buy and offers a ton of cool features. The Full HD 3D feature is integrated on this model, however, on other 3D-ready models a separate transmitter will be required to experience 3D images.

Images from the Sony 3DTV will be, according to Sony, unlike anything you’ve seen before and with technology on board like: Motionflow 200Hz PRO, Edge LED back lighting, full HD 1080 resolution and a Deep Black Panel, it should be something to behold. Innovative features such as Bravia Internet Video, which gives you to access online services and stream full screen videos and programs, Bravia Internet Widgets and Wi-Fi ensure that this TV will handle your 3D tv needs for at least a few years.

Samsung 3D LED TV Active Shutter Glasses

samsung 3d glasses
Amazon and a couple other retailers are selling Samsung 55-inch 3D LED HDTV television sets with a price tag of around $3,000. Naturally, the sets don’t come with 3D glasses, you’ll need to buy those separately in order to view the 3D content on the Samsung screen.

Samsung’s 3D active glasses (model SSG-2100AB) will cost $150 each. Not cheap, especially since you’ll likely need more than one pair.

The liquid crystal lenses in these Active Shutter glasses change from dark to light several hundreds of times per second while communicating wirelessly with the television set. The glasses will also be able to communicate with Samsung-branded Blu-ray players and a Home Theater in Box.

Where To Get Free 3D Glasses

free 3d glasses
I thought I’d do some research and find out where to get free 3D glasses for you. If you are looking to get free ones online, then there are a couple sites you can contact:

These guys seem to have the monopoly on free stuff, and from the looks of it can hook you up with a few pairs of those paper disposable 3D glasses.

These folks also have a huge selection of 3D glasses, and claim to be able to send you some for the cost of shipping and handling.

And for more options to get glasses sent to you from an online source, check out this site.

In the case of a situation where a network is airing a 3D broadcast, they generally make a deal with a big box chain store (like a grocery chain) in order to provide the glasses from their locations. When that happens, we will be posting the locations where free 3D glasses can be obtained, as situations arise.

Avatar Goes “4D” In Korea

Avatar 4d
Sound too good to be true? Of course it is.

The 4D screening of Avatar uses more than 30 effects during the 3D film’s 162 minute run, including moving seats, the smoky smells of explosives, sprinkling water, laser lights and wind. “We (started to) prepared the ‘Avatar’ 4D ride last summer,” says Tom Oh, president of 20th Century Fox Korea.

Korea’s leading multiplex chain, CJ-CGV, began 4D shows last year in one 88-seat theater, with “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” But with the success of “Avatar,” CJ-CGV opened three more “4D plexes.” Ten films have been shown with 4D effects designed by CJ-CGV’s 4D programmer over the last year. Exhib has more 4D titles on tap, including the upcoming “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.”

Why this phenomenon hasn’t started sprouted up in North America is a mystery. Maybe the American audiences aren’t interested in getting wet while they eat their extra large buckets of popcorn.

3D Update for Sony PS3?

playstation3 3d
When will Sony announce a 3D update for their star product, the Playstation 3? And, will it be any good?

Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 3 will get stereoscopic 3D enabling firmware update later this summer.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, said, “the amazing thing about the PS3’s technology is that all PS3 units that exist in homes and markets will be able to play 3D stereoscopic games as well as 3D BD movies through separate firmware upgrades – something that other platforms are unable to do.”

Sony has been one of the TV makers who’re pushing for 3D Display technology. With Sony BRAVIA 3D TVs shipping this summer, the company will also push a 3D enabling PlayStation 3 update to play 3D-stereoscopic games and watch 3D Blu-ray movies.

Panasonic Readies 3DTV For Japan Release

panasonic-Viera-TH-P54VT-3DTV
Panasonic has set an official date for the market debut of its first 3DTV plasma tvs. They said that their 50- and 54-inch Viera VT2 series 3D sets will be available in Japan on April 23. The two TVs will retail for around 430,000 yen (US$4,800) and 530,000 yen (US$5,900.) 3D-capable, Blu-ray recorders and a player will also be rolled out.

The plasma displays use a technology that allows full-resolution 1,920-by-1,080 pixel HD, 60 fps images for both the left and right-eye views. The electronics giant showed a 152-inch full, hi-def 3D plasma display at the CES last month in Vegas.

A Panasonic executive told the press that about 10% of TVs 37 inches or more will likely be 3DTV sets this year, or about 500,000 TVs sold in Japan. He claims that Panasonic will be going after a 50% market share.

Toshiba Announces Its Own 3D TV

toshiba 3d tv
Electronics giants Toshiba have announced that they are also ready to produce a 3D capable TV. Their rivals Samsung revealed earlier this year that they would be releasing three 3D TV sets later this year. Toshiba expressed that it too was developing a similar device, revealing the information as they launched their new range of Freeview HD and LED TVs.

Assistant general manager of Marketing Europe for Toshiba, Olivier Van Wynendaele, made the announcement, saying that the full details of specifications would be revealed at the IFA 2010 this coming September, while they expected the model to ship in the last quarter of the year. “We may not have announced it today but we are looking to release a 3D-Ready TV range this year. We will have more specific details at IFA 2010,” he said.
