LG Launches THX-Certified 3DTV

LG Electronics announced this week that they have launched the first 3DTV to earn certification from audio/visual technology company THX.

The PX950 plasma series is available now in 60-inch ($2,999) and 50-inch ($1,999) sizes. THX certified the 3DTVs after more than 400 tests, evaluating color accuracy, viewing angles and video processing performance, LG said. The 3DTVs use active shutter glasses.

“THX spent more than a year in the lab developing our certification criteria and testing methodologies for 3D TVs and content,” said THX SVP Rick Dean. “To present a truly immersive 3D experience in the home, a THX 3D certified TV must be capable of delivering consistent stereoscopic images with accurate color and clean processing.

LG is a huge player in the entertainment tech market, but hadn’t been saying much about their 3D TV plans. That didn’t mean they didn’t have any though! The LG LX9500 3DTV will be launching in late spring and it is going to be the world’s first full LED 3D TV which comes in a choice of two sizes, the 47 inch and 55 inch.

The viewer will have to wear AG-S100 shutter glasses, which block each lens alternately in time with with the screen’s refresh rate, to benefit from the 3D effect.

There hasn’t been a great deal of information regarding the specs of the TV, although it is known that there will be around 1200 LEDs, a dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 and a refresh rate registered at 240 Hz.
