Warner Bros Pictures has made the decision to release “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” in 2D, in both conventional and IMAX theaters, as we will not have a completed 3D version of the film within our release date window. Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality. We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey, and to that end, we are releasing our film day-and-date on November 19, 2010 as planned. We, in alignment with our filmmakers, believe this is the best course to take in order to ensure that our audiences enjoy the consummate “Harry Potter” experience.

Producer David Heyman said, “For 10 years, we have worked alongside Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been to preserve the integrity of Jo Rowling’s books as we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment.”

Director David Yates continued, “This decision, which we completely support, underscores the fact that Warner Bros. has always put quality first.”

I haven’t decided if this is a good thing or something to fear, but its been confirmed that George Lucas and his team are giving the Star Wars saga the 3D treatment, and then giving them all another theatrical release.

According to Deadline, ILM’s visual effects supervisor says, “Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right. It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results. For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience.”

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is expected to be released theatrically in 2012. A release date has not yet been set for the other five films in the saga. Star Wars creator George Lucas acknowledged publicly earlier this year that the 3D conversion had been stalled but that seeing first Avatar and then Alice In Wonderland become such successes gave him new impetus to make the conversion. Though never a fan of 3D, Lucas has said he’d been looking “for years and years and years” to add 3D to the Star Wars Saga but felt the technology hadn’t measured up until Avatar changed his mind.

Director Michael Bay has confirmed that his trainwreck action series, Transformers, will see its third inception in gloriously expensive 3D. MIchael Bay had previously gone on record as a skeptic of 3D, claiming his movies were too sophisticated to allow for 3D rendering. Transformers 2 convinced him, and the rest of us, that the word ’sophisticated’ has no place in the Transformers universe.

Therefore, in news that is as shocking as a house plant, Transformers 3, which is set to be more drama and less comedy, will be 3D-ified for your viewing pleasure.

James Cameron, who directed a little movie you might have heard of called “Avatar,” the highest grossing film in history, has a few thoughts on what the future holds. “Avatar has proved that 3-D technology is not just a fad but a revolution changing how the audience chooses to consume media and entertainment content, said Cameron at the Seoul Digital Forum.

“Quite simply, where they had a choice, the audience was selecting for the best possible way to see the movie,” he said. “And they saw 3-D as the premium viewing experience.” This shift could come, according to the King of the World, as soon as “in a couple of years,” but “definitely less than the 25 years it took color movies,” he told reporters at a press conference after the speech.

Screenwriter Craig Pearce (who worked with Baz Luhrmann on Moulin Rouge and Romeo + Juliet), has set the sequel hundreds years after the events of the original film, at a time when darkness has once more fallen across the world. A girl made of fire must journey with a Gelfling outcast to use a fragment of the crystal to re-ignite the sun. Hmmm. Sounds cool – we’ll see.

Fantasy artist Brian Froud is back on board creating the conceptual design for the movie, which will blend puppetry and animatronics with CGI.

At Sony’s 2009 ShoWest presentation, Rory Bruer, who is a fairly decent rumor source, as he is the President of Sony Worldwide Distribution, announced they were developing another Men in Black movie. He also dropped the number 2011 as the likely release date. And now, to even seal the deal further – Showbiz411 is reporting Will Smith has officially signed on to Men in Black 3D and Tommy Lee Jones will be back as Agent K.

The original Men in Black film, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, was released on July 2, 1997 by Columbia Pictures and grossed over $587 million worldwide against a $90 million budget. It is currently the 49th highest grossing film of all time.

The Wall Street Journal reports on the price hikes, which are significant in some areas. The primary showings affected are 3D, but some standard presentations will now be slightly more expensive, as well. As an example, the paper says,

“At some theaters in the northwest, adult admission is rising to $11 from $10 for a conventional film, to $15 from $13.50 for a regular 3-D showing and to $17 from $15 for Imax 3-D.”

The Buck Rogers rights are controlled by Paradox, the company doing the new Conan the Barbarian with Marcus Nispel directing. Paradox will finance the Buck Rogers development, and Anderson’s longtime partner, Jeremy Bolt, is producing with Fredrik Malmberg,with Larry Abramson and George Furla.

I love Robert Altman’s Popeye film, so I’m not that excited at the prospect of Sony scraping the old idea barrel to come up with this. I can just picture the suits sitting around the “idea table” and coming up with “awesome 3D ideas!” Someone probably said that having a person repeatedly punch at the audience would be cool – and the idea of punching led to Popeye.

In any case, screenwriter Mike Jones (The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break) is currently in negotiations to adapt the movie, and according to him, he’s “an unabashed, lifelong Popeye fan, and introducing this squinty-eyed sailor to a new generation also means reintroducing him to those who, like me, grew up with him.”

We’ll see, Mr. Mike Jones and Sony. We’ll see.

News Corp. Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey told SmartMoney, that despite the recent hype over at-home 3D TV, the market for 3D products is not stable enough for a release.

“The market is not there in the short-term,” Carey said. He did not turn down the option of releasing a 3D version of Avatar at a later date.
